
Prof. Maegala Nallapan Maniyam

Biography:
Maegala is currently affiliated with the Institute of Bio-IT Selangor, Universiti Selangor. She
possesses a strong educational background in Chemistry and Biotechnology. Maegala is a
dedicated and motivated researcher, having undergone proteomics training at Imperial
College London. Her research primarily focuses on Environmental Biotechnology and Green
Chemistry, with a specific emphasis on the role of Rhodococcus in bioremediation.
Throughout her research endeavors, Maegala has published 30 papers in highly impactful
journals indexed in WoS and Scopus, and has contributed 3 book chapters. She has also
served as a reviewer for 24 international journals indexed in WoS and Scopus. In recognition
of her research excellence, Maegala was honored with the Excellent Researcher Award by
Universiti Selangor in both 2017 and 2018. Additionally, she received the Outstanding Women
in Science (Biotechnology) Award from the Venus International Women Foundation in
Chennai in 2018.
Maegala actively participates in the secretariat of the Women in Science group and the
National STEM Movement. She dedicates herself to promoting Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) among secondary school students and prospective
teachers. Her efforts have been acknowledged with gold medals at the Malaysia Technology
Expo (MTE) competitions in 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022.
Furthermore, Maegala is a self-driven leader with excellent communication and interpersonal
skills. She finds great satisfaction in actively contributing to the community, offering guidance
and support in programs such as feeding the homeless and teaching English to students at
Tamil schools.
