Biography:

Prof. (Dr.) InderVir Malhan is Dean, Academicand Dean, School of Mathematics, Computers and Information Science. He is heading the Department of Library and Information Science and is In-charge Librarian of the University Library System of Central University of Himachal Pradesh. He is also heading the Department of Mathematics and Department of Computer Science & Informatics at this University. He is a member of Academic Council and member of Executive Council of this University. He is on the planning and Monitoring Board of the University.

Prior to this, he headed the Department of Library and Information Science at the University of Jammu for more than eleven years and also headed the University of Jammu Library System for more than six years. He worked at this university on several important positions such Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences; Dean, Faculty of Behaviour Sciences; and Director, Academic Staff College He remained member of Syndicate at the University of Jammu and member of Academic Councils of the University of Jammu and the University of Kashmir, Srinagar.

At the national level, he is member of the UGC expert committee set up for coordinating and vetting the development of model curricula for undergraduate studies in library and information science. He is member of Research Advisory Board of Developing Library Network (DELNET) and a member of UGC National Committee on Electronic Submission of Theses and Dissertations. He is chairman of R &D Panel on ongoing Initiatives of INFLIBNET.Heis topical coordinator for e-PGPathshala project. He remained member of Panel on Content Analysis MSD5/P-10, Bureau of Indian Standards, New Delhi. He is on the expert panel of Govt. of India, Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology and actively participated for terminology development in Library and Information Science. He is a member of Committee to propose draft Library Legislation for the State of Jammu and Kashmir. He remained Advisor to the Department of Public Libraries and Research, Govt. of Jammu and Kashmir. He remained member of Advisory Committees of Academic Staff Colleges, Library Committees of Central and State Universities and on the management boards of colleges and KendriVidyalyas. He is member of the school boards and board of studies of a number of universities.

On the academic front Prof. Malhan published 112 papers in Indian and foreign journals and conference volumes. He authored and edited 13 books that are published in India andabroad. His works are cited in several Indian and foreign publications including some foreign language publications and publications of International bodies.He supervised andsuccessfully completed the work ofthirteen Ph.D. and five M.Phil Scholars. He visited sixteen countries, presented papers and chaired sessions at national and international conferences. He received four best paper presentation awards. Prof. Malhan organized two national conferences and also conducted several short training courses and workshops for library and information professionals. He delivered invited lectures in India and abroad as resource person at refresher courses, workshops including international workshops organized by international bodies and professional associations such as UNESCO and IFLA. He extensively contributed to professional journalism as he remained associated with more than ten professional journals published from India and abroad.

Prof. Malhan is Fellow of Society of Information Science. He is recipient of IASL Leadership Development Grant, USA (1989) and Fulbright Fellowship in Library and Information Science (1996-97). He received Goethe Institute Grant to attend IFLA Presidential meeting in Germany in 2008. He is awarded Kaula-Ranganathan Gold Medal. He received ILA-GidwaniDeshpandey Award. He is recipient of SATKAL National Award and Harish Chandra-Sushila Chandra National Award. He received PLA-Satija Award for professional excellence and a certificate of honour from AADLI for dedicated service to the profession.

Prof. Malhan got third term as Vice-President of Indian Association of Teachers of Library and Information Science (IATLIS) (2014-16). He is Vice-President of SatenderKaurRamdev Trust for advancement of librarianship and remained member of P.N. Kaula Trust. He remained member of ASIS, USA, ISKO, GERMANY, IAALD, LEXINGTON, KY, USA, and is presently member of SLA, USA, Asian Chapter. He is life member of ILA, IATLIS and SIS. Born in a rural village namely Sidhwan-Bet in the Ludhiana District of Panjab, Prof. Malhan had his schooling from the rural government school. He graduated in Science in first division and did M.Lib.Sc (Gold Medalist) from Panjab University, Chandigarh breaking the previous university records. He did his Ph.D. from the same university in the ScienceCommunicationand started his teaching career from this high academic ranking university. He had a teaching and research experience of more than thirty eight years at the Panjab University, Chandigarh, University of Jammu, Jammu (Tawi) and the Central University of Himachal Pradesh, Dharamshala.
