Prof. G J Sharma

Biography:

Prof Sharma did BSc (Hons) from Gauhati University (1971), MSc (Botany) from Banaras Hindu University (1973), MPhil (Life Sciences) in 1974 and PhD (Radiation Biology) in 1982 from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Since 1976, he worked as Assistant/ Associate Professor at Department of Life Sciences, Manipur University where he became a Professor of Genetics & Radiation Biology in 1992, Professor (HAG) in 2014, UGC-BSR Faculty Fellow (2016-19) and Emeritus Professor (2019-20). He was Head, Department of Life Sciences (1994-96), Director, Department of Biotechnology (2006-07), Dean, School of Sciences (2009-10), Dean, School of Life Sciences (2010-12) and Coordinator, UGC-Centre of Advanced Study in Life Sciences, MU (2012-15). Recipient of various scholarships and fellowships throughout his career, Prof Sharma received National Scholarships, Ministry of Education, Government of India (1967-73), UGC Junior/ Senior Research Fellowships (1973-76), UGC Teacher Fellowship (1979-82), Commonwealth Academic Staff Fellowship (1989-90), Indo-Italian Cultural Exchange Program Fellowship (2000) and UGC-BSR Faculty Research Fellowship (2016-19). He worked as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow [Attn: Professor Robin Willson] at Department of Biochemistry, Brunel University, London in the emerging field of Free Radical Biochemistry. He was a Senior Visiting Professor (Attn: Prof Anna Ferro-Luzzi] at National Institute of Food and Nutrition Research, Rome.

He has delivered twenty two Invited/ Plenary/ Keynote lectures in international conferences held at National Botanic Garden (Singapore), Chiang Mai University (Thailand), INRAN, Rome (Italy), Wageningen University, Leiden (Netherlands), Imperial College, London (UK), JB Hynes Convention Center, Boston (US) and India besides chairing in a number of scientific sessions including International Conference on Radiation Biology, 11-13 November 2014, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, Biotech International Conference and Exhibition, 28-30 June 2017, Pôle Universitäire, Paris, France; 3rd International Conference on Agronomy and Horticulture, 28-30 November 2017, Sanya, (China), International Conference on Plant Science and Physiology, 21-22 May 2018, Osaka (Japan), Global Congress on Biotechnology, 6-7 September 2018, Bangkok (Thailand), 15th International Conference on Alternative Medicine, 9-10 December 2019, Bangkok (Thailand), etc. A Chartered Biologist of the Institute of Biology, London, UK, he was also associated with running an international newsletter, Magnetic Resonance Detection of Irradiated Foodstuffs published from National Institute of Standards & Technology, Maryland, USA.

Prof Sharma has guided eleven MSc/ MPhil dissertations and twenty three PhD theses. He has carried out research projects sponsored by UGC, BRNS, DAE, GBPIHED, DBT and ICMR. He has served as Member, Basic Sciences Committee-II (Biology & Medical), Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India, Expert Member, Research Committee on Medicinal Plants, Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, and Expert Member, UK-India Education & Research Initiative, HRD Ministry, Government of India, Expert Committee Member for Establishment of Biotech Labs (BLiSS) in North-east Region, and Expert Committee Member for Selection of Visiting Research Professors under DBT, New Delhi. He was involved in proposing and defending the establishment of the DBT Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), Imphal and keenly associated with the production of educational films. His film, Tupi’s Nanas (a film on pineapples) won him the Best Resource Person Award (1997) in Science, Mathematics & Engineering at the Xth UGC-CEC Audio-visual Competition, New Delhi. Prof Sharma was recipient of the prestigious Birbal Sahni Centenary Award (2009) for outstanding contributions in the field of Life Sciences and Bharat Ratna Dr Abdul Kalam Gold Medal for outstanding achievement in Education and Research (2019). He has edited a book: Current Topics in Redox Biology (hard copy & e-version) published by McGraw Hill Education, New Delhi and New York (2014 & 2015).
