Title: Optimal management and project review of metabolic syndrome in schizophrenic patients
Abstract:
The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in patients with schizophrenia is 2-3 times higher than that in the general population, and long-term use of antipsotic drugs is the main cause of metabolic syndrome in patients. Metabolic syndrome not only increases the incidence and mortality of cardiovascular diseases in patients with schizophrenia, but also seriously affects the functional outcome of patients and reduces the quality of life of patients, which requires timely and correct management. The Chinese expert consensus indicates that the management of metabolic syndrome in patients with schizophrenia includes assessment, monitoring, prevention, and treatment. Based on a detailed assessment of metabolic indicators and risk factors, patients are stratified for management, adopting a principle of prevention first and combining prevention and treatment.
The Chinese Medical Association's Schizophrenia Collaborative Group has continued to promote the 2020 Metabolic Expert Consensus and gradually implement it, in order to understand the metabolic abnormalities of schizophrenia patients nationwide and guide the metabolic intervention work of demonstration hospitals. This study was initiated by the sixth School of Peking University, linked 22 provinces/municipalities across the country, and radiated more than 200 medical joint units. Project time: March 2023 - December 2023. The Xi'an Mental Health Center, as a "demonstration base for the five northwest provinces," screened 703 patients with schizophrenia, the average age of patients was 36.38±11.43 years, the male-to-female ratio was 7:9, and 73% of patients had been taking medication for more than 5 years. Among them, 143 patients with metabolic syndrome accounted for 20%; 369 patients with borderline accounted for 52%;191 patients with high risk accounted for 27%; and the prevalence of dyslipidemia was as high as 50%.
