Title: From the Blackboard to the Algorithm: Technological Innovation in Secondary Education in Italy
Abstract:
The paper explores the impact of artificial intelligence in the context of secondary education, focusing on benefits and emerging issues. The examination is conducted by means of a literature review and a questionnaire survey addressed to teachers, with the aim of drawing a detailed picture of their training needs. From the analysis of the teachers' responses and the academic literature, it is clear that artificial intelligence deploys extensive opportunities, such as personalising learning, optimising access to teaching resources and reducing the teaching load for teachers. These potentials are positively received in classrooms, especially by students although, on the part of teachers, there is a clear awareness of the underlying criticalities, such as technological dependence, data security issues, the risk of plagiarism and the reduction of the capacity for autonomous and creative thinking. However, the specific training deficit for teachers and the limited familiarity with the latest technological developments in artificial intelligence emerge as major critical issues. Therefore, a fruitful integration of artificial intelligence in education requires a holistic approach, capable of proactively responding to the training needs of each actor involved.
