Title: OFFSHORE WIND TURBINE: RECENT TRENDS IN STRUCTURES AND FOUNDATIONS

Abstract:

Wind energy is one of the most sustainable and renewable sources of power generation, and the device which derives such energy is termed as wind turbine. In offshore regions, consistent wind energy is available both in quality and quantity-wise. This ensures that Offshore Wind Turbines (OWTs) derive significant wind energy compared to onshore installations. Design, manufacture and installation of OWTs require state-of-the-art technology due to adverse ocean environment to meet the safety and serviceability criteria. This requires adequate understanding of electro-mechanical efficiency, operations and dynamic stress distributions, along with the stabilities of the supporting structural and foundation components. Remarkably high level of multi-axial stresses due to uneven aerodynamic wind loading and hydrodynamic wave loads are imparted on a typical OWT, which should be accounted for the design of its mechanical and structural components. The main tower-shaft should be capable to resist the static, dynamic and cyclic loads and their critical combinations. The design of foundation depends on the sea water depth and construction technique undertaken. Adoption and design of foundation is based on the effects of wind, waves, tidal current and range, construction technique, installation, and disassembling procedure, etc. The most popular foundation type adopted are gravity type, mono-pile, suction caisson, and multi-pod. The current presentation describes the recent advances in structural elements and foundation of OWTs, together with the research and development in the relevant areas conducted by the speaker and his co-workers. Such advances include vibration analysis of structural components, response of foundations under critical static and cyclic loads, among others.
