Title: Spatial Resolution Range of Nano-crystallization of Metallic Glasses by X-Ray Diffraction and Scanning Tunneling Microscopy
Abstract:
A fundamental study was conducted to characterize the boundary line between nano-crystallization of amorphous, i.e., short range ordered, structures and poly-crystallization, i.e., long range ordered, structures. The structure characterization of amorphous metallic glasses was carried out in as received condition and annealed conditions based on obtained data of X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy (STM). The spatial resolution, i.e., boundary line, of nano-crystallization of the short ranged ordered and long ranged ordered structures was defined for the first time by the aid of the diffraction theory. The obtained results of the present study show that the diffraction theory, which was initially derived by Sherrer, can be extended to a spatial resolution not only to the boundary line between micro-crystallization of amorphous, i.e., short range ordered, structures and poly-crystallization, long range ordered, structures, but also, it can define the boundary line between nano-crystallization of amorphous, i.e., short range ordered, structures and poly-crystallization, long range ordered, structures.
