Dr.  Faisal  Rafique

Title: Research on the Low-frequency wideband sound absorption mechanisms of inhomogeneous microperforated panel metamaterials.

Abstract:

Low-frequency noise has the characteristics of strong penetrability and less attenuation. It has become one of the most significant environmental pollutants and has a serious influence on the natural habitat and social development. However, traditional sound-absorbing materials have poor absorption performance for low-frequency sound owing to weak energy dissipation. In order to accomplish the ideal absorption effect, it is essential to expand the propagation path of the sound waves, which will increase the thickness of the sound waves and is not conducive to engineering applications. In recent years, the development of acoustic metamaterials has greatly broadened the concept of traditional materials and offered a new approach to solve the complication of low-frequency broadband sound absorption. Therefore, this work investigates the sound absorption mechanism, structural design, and engineering application of the inhomogeneous microperforated panel (iMPP) based acoustic metamaterials by the theoretical analysis, finite element simulation (FEM), and experimental examination for the achievement of admirable low-frequency broadband sound absorption.

Biography:

Dr. Faisal Rafique received his BE degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore, Pakistan, in 2013, Master's and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Xi'an Jiaotong University in 2019 and 2022. He worked as an Advanced Research Engineer (R&D) in the Noise and Vibration Control (NVH) department of the Industrial Technology Research Centre of Midea Group in Foshan, Guangdong Province, from 2022 to 2024. 
Currently, He’s working as a Research Assistant Professor (Post-Doctorate) in the Department of Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China. 
Dr. Faisal Rafique specializes in research on vibration and noise control for modern equipment, applications of acoustic metamaterials. He has authored over 15 high-impact academic papers, which have garnered over 250 citations on Google Scholar. He has submitted 3 patent applications for inventions and published a monograph titled "A thin Foil absorber multiple-layer acoustic membranes".
