Title: Performance of recently introduced cutting tools on advanced materials in end milling process
Abstract:
Advanced materials such as nickel based steel alloys, machinable glass ceramic and aluminium nitride, and titanium alloys are known for their exceptional mechanical properties like high heat resistance, corrosion resistance, toughness, high operating temperatures, and excellent strength to weight ratio. These characteristics make them essential in industries such as aerospace, energy, petrochemicals, and biomedical engineering. However, these materials are categorized as difficult to machine due to their poor machinability, often resulting in compromised surface integrity when using conventional machining methods. One of the major challenges in machining these materials is the selection of appropriate cutting tool materials that can deliver high quality surface finishes. To overcome this, there have been rapid advancements in cutting tool technologies, aimed in improving wear resistance and overall machining performance. Innovations in tool materials, geometry, and the capabilities of high speed CNC machines are enabling more effective conventional machining of these advanced materials. This progress not only enhances machinability but also reduces overall production costs by minimizing or even eliminating the need for secondary grinding processes without sacrificing product quality. This topic covers the performance of modern cutting tools in machining ceramics, Inconel 718, and titanium alloys, with a focus on improving their machinability and expanding their practical application across industries.
