Title: Electromagnetic and radio‑absorbing properties of polycrystalline spinel- ferrites

Abstract:

The paper studies, presents, and analyzes the electromagnetic (complex dielectric permittivity, complex magnetic permeability) and radio‑absorbing (reflection coefficient on a metal plate) properties of polycrystalline spinel ferrites NiZn-, MnZn-, MgMnZn-, and LiMnZn- in the frequency range of 0.001–7.0 GHz.

The samples of polycrystalline spinel ferrites were produced using ceramic technology. The preparation of the ferrite charge was carred out using pure starting components (oxides) containing an amount of the basic substance of more than 99.6 % by mass. To measure the complex dielectric permittivity, complex magnetic permeability, and reflection coefficient on a metal plate, a Rohde&Schwarz ZVL‑13 vector network analyzer and the CELL‑2 software package were used. The values of the dielectric constant ε* and magnetic permeability μ* were studied using the Nicholson–Ross–Weir method through a comprehensive analysis of phase angles and dimensionless S‑parameters (S11, S12, S22, S21).

It has been established that NiZn‑ and LiMnZn‑ferrite‑spinels are good radio‑absorbing materials. The maximum losses due to the absorption of electromagnetic waves for these ferrites, with a sample thickness of 5.0–6.0 mm, reach – (20 ÷ 25) dB. The active mechanisms of electromagnetic wave absorption in the studied ferrites are discussed. The prospects for the actual application of the studied ferrites as radio‑absorbing and radio‑shielding materials are considered and analysed.
