Abstract:
The electrochemistry at the
interface of the two immiscible electrolyte solutions (i.e.
water-nitrobenzene) remains a rather limited field in the general scope of
electrochemistry. However it provides the possibility for the electroanalytical
determination of ions normally considered to be electroinactive in the sense of
electron exchange. However many ions of this type readily cross the ITIES,
which can be quantitatively registered measuring the ionic current through the
interface. In the present study we applied the microperforated with the
femtosecond laser PET film for the stabilization of the interface (Fig. 1).
The electrochemical cell was driven by a 4-electrode potentiostat Ecotest-VA4,
the organic electrolyte was the o-nitrophenyl octyl ether with 10 mM tetrakisdecylammonium
tetrakis (clorophenyl)boranate as the supporting electrolyte. The organic phase
was placed into a Teflon cylinder, the perforated membrane was attached to its
bottom and the cylinder was inserted into the aqueous phase, containing MgSO4 as the supporting electrolyte. The reference electrodes in the aqueous phase
was the saturated silver chloride electrode and the silver tetrakis
(clorophenyl)boranate electrode was used in the organic phase. The auxillary
electrodes in the both phases were platinum wires.
Perchlorate-ion is one of ions difficult to
reduce and impossible to oxidize. However the applied technique readily
provides the analytical response as the ion flow across ITIES (Fig. 2).
The above technique was successfully applied to determination of ions used in
the lithium accumulators, that is BF4-, PF6- and AsF6- and also to some other ions as ReO4-,
TcO4- and several cations. The ion flow signal of TcO4- was never observed before the present study.
